NEW YORK CITY, March 30???The New York Academy of Medicine will host a workshop for the public on Thursday, April 27, entitled "How to Find Your Way through the Healthcare Maze." The workshop will run from 8:30-10:30 a.m. and is designed to help consumers take their first steps into an increasingly complex healthcare system. The ultimate goal is to empower as many people as possible to successfully navigate the confusing system so that they can get healthy and stay that way.
All too frequently, when there is a sudden need to seek expert medical care for oneself or a loved one, healthcare consumers have difficulty knowing where to start???be it finding critical health information, a trusted medical provider, or a person who can offer some guidance. Despite a wealth of medical information available in literature and on the Internet, taking these first steps are daunting at best, particularly when one must advocate for their own care amidst complex health and social systems. This workshop is designed to inform participants about how to embark on first steps into the healthcare system.
Among the practical questions to be addressed at the workshop: how to find a primary care physician and get referrals; how to know when you need a specialist; when to get a second opinion; what to do if a second opinion is contradictory; how to effectively use your time with a physician; and, how to cope when a family member needs care.
The suggested registration fee is $10. Register online at www.nyam.org/events/ or by calling 212.822.7272. On-site registration will also be possible on the day of the workshop. An early breakfast and registration will begin at 7:45 a.m. Academy President Dr. Jeremiah A. Barondess will give opening remarks at 8:30 a.m., followed by two exciting and well-known guest speakers. They are:
-Dr. Marianne J. Legato, MD, FACP, a Professor in Clinical Medicine at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, senior attending physician at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, and attending physician at the Presbyterian Hospital.
