AAAS President Giving Lecture at Academy Next Week on Gene Research and its Potential to Transform Public Health

NEW YORK CITY, May 12--Scientists spent 13 years decoding nature???s complex genetic blueprint for building a human, successfully identifying, mapping and sequencing all of the approximately 20,000-25,000 genes that make up human DNA. The knowledge gained from this field of study, called genomics, is expected to revolutionize the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of disease in humans. This puts us ???in the midst of a golden era for the public health sciences,??? says Gilbert S. Omenn, MD, president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). In a lecture at The New York Academy of Medicine on Thursday, May 18, at 5 p.m., Dr. Omenn will elucidate the human health applications of genomics research. The topics he will address include:

??? The search to find DNA sequences that underlie common medical disorders, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis, and cancer, and how knowledge of the fundamental causes of disease allows for earlier diagnoses, development of gene-targeted treatments, and monitoring of individual responses to therapy;

??? Molecular signatures of exposures to potentially toxic chemicals, early effects from such exposure, and genetic variation in susceptibility;

??? Strategies for developing gene-based drugs and vaccines and for meeting the ???grand challenges??? in global health of the Gates Foundation and The National Institutes of Health, such as improving the delivery of childhood vaccines, combating infectious diseases, and improving nutrition to promote health;

??? Health services research that could lead us on the path to predictive, personalized, preventive, and participatory healthcare ??? while addressing huge disparities in health and healthcare;

??? Ethical issues related to genomic applications and public health.

In addition to serving as president of the AAAS, Dr. Omenn is professor of Internal Medicine, Human Genetics, and Public Health at the University of Michigan. He is the author of 407 research papers and scientific reviews and author/editor of 17 books.

Founded in 1847, The New York Academy of Medicine is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit institution whose mission is to enhance the health of the public. The Academy is a leading center for urban health policy and action working to enhance the health of people living in cities worldwide through research, education, advocacy, and prevention.
