NEW YORK CITY, May 24--The New York Academy of Medicine is pleased to announce the election of four new Trustees: Dr. Kenneth L. Davis, Dr. Joseph M. Feczko, Thomas L. Harrison, and A. Gifford Miller, who together bring a wide array of experience and wisdom to the Academy.
Dr. Kenneth L. Davis is President and CEO of the Mount Sinai Medical Center and Dean of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Prior to his current appointment, Dr. Davis was the Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, Esther and Joseph Klingenstein Professor of Psychiatry and Professor of Pharmacology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine from 1987-2003. Early in his career, Dr. Davis conducted research that laid the foundation for development of the therapeutics currently used to treat Alzheimer's disease. In addition to continuing work to develop new treatments, he has pioneered innovative techniques for understanding the early stages of the disease. Dr. Davis is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and has authored or co-authored over 500 scientific articles. He is a Fellow of The New York Academy of Medicine and Chair of its Council on Biomedical Research and Development.
Dr. Joseph M. Feczko is President of Worldwide Development and Chief Medical Officer of Pfizer Inc. In these roles, Dr. Feczko brings together all aspects of clinical development in two of Pfizer???s largest groups: Pfizer Global Research and Development, and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Group. His vision is to foster new thinking toward a development continuum that spans the entire life-cycle of Pfizer???s products. Dr. Feczko first came to Pfizer in 1982, working as part of the International Medical Marketing Team. He became Director of Clinical Research in 1984. In 1992, he left Pfizer to serve as Medical Director at Glaxo???s Research and Development headquarters in London, and returned to Pfizer in 1996 as Senior Vice President for the Medical and Regulatory Operations unit. In April 2001, he was appointed Vice President for Pfizer Inc. Dr. Feczko is a board-certified internist and infectious disease specialist.
Thomas Harrison is Chairman and CEO of Diversified Agency Services (DAS), the world???s largest holding group of marketing services companies. A division of Omnicom Group, DAS provides a broad range of marketing communications services including public relations, crisis management, branding, sales promotion, customer relationship management, and specialty communications such as healthcare advertising for some of the largest global brands. Harrison???s multi-faceted career brought him to Omnicom in 1992 when the firm he co-founded, Harrison & Star Business Group, the most successful and rapidly growing agency in the healthcare industry at the time, was acquired. Harrison has an advanced degree in cell biology and physiology, and among other ventures, founded his own medical education company and direct-to-consumer healthcare company. Harrison serves on the boards of Montefiore Hospital, the New York Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, and ePocrates, a healthcare information company, among others. Harrison is a member of the New York University Campaign Steering Committee, is Chairman of the Dean???s Council at The Steinhardt School of Education at NYU and is a Trustee at The Kent School, a New England Preparatory School.
A. Gifford Miller served as the Speaker of the New York City Council from 2002-2005. A life-long Democrat and New Yorker, Mr. Miller was first elected to the City Council in 1996 as the youngest City Council member in history. In his role as Speaker, Mr. Miller served as the chief executive of the legislative branch of New York's municipal government, and oversaw the passage of all new laws and the city's $47 billion annual budget. Under his leadership, the Council pursued a far-reaching progressive agenda and passed more legislation than any previous Council, including bills to extend a living wage to 50,000 workers, protect children from lead paint poisoning, provide training and education to people moving from welfare to work, require every city hospital to offer emergency contraception to sexual assault victims, and establish tax credits to encourage greater energy savings and cleaner air. Mr. Miller is the founder of Miller Strategies, a strategic consulting firm serving businesses and non-profit organizations, and is a lecturer and Public Figure in Residence at New York University.
