Academy President Supports Initiatives by DOHMH Commissioner to Eliminate Most Artificial Trans Fat from NYC Restaurants and Require Visible Labeling for Caloric Content of Many Fast Foods

NEW YORK CITY, Sept. 26 ??? New York Academy of Medicine President Jeremiah A. Barondess, MD, today expressed his strong support of the initiatives that Thomas R. Frieden, MD, MPH, has proposed: to eliminate most artificial trans fat from food served in all New York City restaurants, and to require many fast-food restaurants to post calorie content of the foods they serve, on their menus and menu boards.

"The two initiatives announced today by the city Department of Health and Mental Hygiene represent extraordinarily important efforts in behalf of the health of every New Yorker," Barondess said. "Trans fats are one of the foods most injurious to health through their accelerating effect on atherosclerosis and the disorders that derive from it, especially coronary heart disease and stroke. Reducing the levels of trans fat in our diet and ultimately phasing them out is a key step in protecting cardiovascular health."

"Requiring caloric equivalents on menu choices is another forward-looking and important step toward protecting health for all," Barondess said. "We are in the midst of an epidemic of obesity that now extends back to early childhood. Nearly two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese, and more than 40 percent of New York City children in kindergarten and first grade are as well. Helping to make food choices more rational in a caloric sense, along with achieving and maintaining adequate levels of physical activity will go a long way toward helping individuals to move toward non-obese body weight."

The proposed changes are available for public comment on the Department's website, nyc.gov/health. There will be a public hearing on Oct. 30.
