Academy Library Offering Health Information Classes for the Public

NEW YORK CITY, February 21, 2007 - The New York Academy of Medicine Library is offering a variety of free and low-cost computer-based health information classes for the general public from now through May, continuing a commitment to improving consumer health by empowering people to find reliable medical information on the web. Classes for consumers and researchers alike include Introduction to Alternative Medicine Resources, Health & Wellness Resource Center, Researching Genetic Conditions on the Internet, and History of Medicine Resources.

The courses foster the growth of independent research skills for anyone desiring access to quality medical information from reputable sources.

“As the amount of health information available to the public increases exponentially, being a savvy information consumer becomes all the more important,” said Winifred King, Coordinator for Education and Outreach Services at the Academy. “The Library’s health literacy classes are designed to teach members of the public how to search for health information more effectively.”

The courses being offered are:

Locating Material at The New York Academy of Medicine Library: Mar 1 ??? 3:30-6 pm In this free class, learn about the Library’s collections, how to use the Library, and how to use the Online Catalog to locate and request materials. Includes a brief tour of the public areas of the Library as well as a brief introduction to the Rare Book Room and a viewing of several valued items. The Academy Library houses the second largest medical collection open to the general public in the United States.

Health & Wellness Resource Center/ Health Reference Center: Mar 6 ??? 10 am -Noon An introductory class on how to use these two clinical and consumer information databases, which provide access to more over 900 health/medical journals, newsletters, and pamphlets.

History of Medicine Resources: Mar 15 ??? 10 am ???Noon Interested in the history of medicine? Need to know what resources are freely available on the web for such research? This class will guide you in exploring useful print and electronic resources for researching historical topics in medicine.

Introduction to PubMed: Apr 11 ??? 4-6 pm Students will learn how to use the National Library of Medicine’s MEDLINE database through the PubMed portal. PubMed is a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine that includes more than 16 million citations for biomedical articles dating back to the 1950s.

Introduction to Alternative Medicine Resources: Apr 17 ??? 4-6 pm This class provides an introduction to books and Internet resources in alternative medicine, as well as an introduction to Alt-HealthWatch, a full-text database of alternative medicine periodicals.

CINAHL: Apr 18 ??? 4-6 pm Newly launched last fall, this provides instruction on how to finding nursing and allied health material in the extensive CINAHL This class is geared towards information and health care professionals.

Advanced PubMed Searching: May 2 ??? 10 am-Noon (also Feb 27 ??? 3-5 pm) This class highlights the advanced search features of PubMed. (You must have attended the Academy’s Introduction to PubMed class within the past 12 months to be eligible for the advanced class).

How to Save Searches and More in PubMed (My NCBI): May 2 ??? 12:15-1:15 pm (also Feb 27 ??? 5:15-6:15 pm) This one-hour class focuses exclusively on the My NCBI features in PubMed. Learn how to save searches, create result tabs for specific library collections and more. This class can be taken alone for the standard class price or with Advanced PubMed Searching for $15 ($7 for seniors and students).

Researching Genetic Conditions on the Internet: May 16 ??? 12:15-1:15 pm An exploration of useful freely available electronic resources for researching genetic conditions, including the National Library of Medicine database Genetics Home Reference. This class can be taken alone for the standard class price or with Health Research on the Internet for $15 ($7 for seniors and students).

Health Research on the Internet: May 16 ??? 10 am-Noon Learn the fundamentals of searching for, and evaluating medical information on the Internet for content, validity and accuracy. This class can be taken alone for the standard class price or with Researching Genetic Conditions on the Internet for $15 ($7 for seniors and students).

"I’ve Got This Old Book": Researching Your Historic Book: May 23 ??? 4-6 pm This class is for those who wish to find information about the author of their old book, or who wish to find out if their old book is important or valuable. Interest in finding out about old books is sufficient; ownership of old books is not required.

Classes are taught by Academy reference librarians in the Library’s computer instruction room and are free or low-cost, with special discounts available to students and senior citizens. Classes are open to the general public, requiring only basic knowledge of the computer. Class size is limited to 10 registrants per session. NYAM Report - Federal Health Care Reform in New York State: A Population Health Perspective

The New York Academy of Medicine with support from the New York State Heath Foundation released a new report, Federal Health Care Reform in New York State: A Population Health Perspective.

This report identifies opportunities that build on both the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act (ACA) and New York’s ongoing efforts toward improving the health of its 19 million residents.
