Dr. Maurice B. Burg, Recipient of Edward N. Gibbs Award

Dr. Burg presents his lecture, "Living with Salt" at the Edward N. Gibbs Lecture and Award Ceremony, October 15th.
attended the event hosted by the The New York Academy of Medicine. Dr. Burg is a Principal Investigator at the National Institutes of Health. He graduated Harvard College in 1952 and Harvard Medical School in 1955. He revolutionized the field of renal physiology by developing new techniques to study the function of individual nephron segments and using these techniques to identify many new transport systems as well as the sites of action of vasopressin and major diuretics. Since 1986 he has been studying the mechanisms by which cells survive and function in the kidney medulla where they are exposed to extremely high concentrations of salt and urea. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the Homer Smith Award and election to the National Academy of Sciences.

NYAM Report - Federal Health Care Reform in New York State: A Population Health Perspective

The New York Academy of Medicine with support from the New York State Heath Foundation released a new report, Federal Health Care Reform in New York State: A Population Health Perspective.

This report identifies opportunities that build on both the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act (ACA) and New York’s ongoing efforts toward improving the health of its 19 million residents.
