New York ??? October 14, The New York Academy of Medicine held an event sponsored by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation. Speakers Daniel D. Federman, MD and John M. Driscoll, MD spoke about humanism in honor of Steve Miller, MD a champion for the patient experience who served as role model to both his students and colleagues.
Both lecturers provided a thought provoking presentation on the role humanism plays in the medical profession. As Dr. Driscoll explained, "we have amazing capabilities in 2008 that weren’t existent when I started as a resident. One of Steve’s concerns expressed to me was that he didn’t want to see medicine become a technical trade. Beyond all those amazing advances there was a patient and our commitment to the patient came before anything else. He lived and breathed that every moment of his life."
Dr. Federman took the audience through the history of the word: humanism. In all of his years of experience he has found that the proper role model influences the practice of humanism in medicine. For his full presentation please click here
Steve Miller, an extraordinary pediatrician, humanist and educator, died tragically in 2004. The Steve Miller Fund for Humanism in Medicine was created to enhance the interaction of physicians and other caregivers with those who seek help because of illness or disease. Humanism encompasses the core concepts of respect, empathy, selflessness, and integrity. It is a pillar of the clinical transaction, the heart and soul of the true professional. The Miller Fund supports activities to enhance humanism in medicine and annual lecture supported by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation.
Daniel D. Federman, MD, NYAM trustee, is Senior Dean for Alumni Relations and Clinical Teaching and Carl W. Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Medical Education at Harvard Medical School. He was one of the founding editors of Scientific American Medicine. In 1994 he was named Massachusetts Physician of the Year by the American College of Physicians, and in 1995 received the ACP Distinguished Teacher Award. The Endocrine Society honored him with their Distinguished Educator Award in 1999 and the AAMC with their Abraham Flexner Award for Distinguished Service to Medical Education in 2001. Dr. Federman graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School.
The Arnold P. Gold Foundation’s mission is to perpetuate the tradition of the doctor by emphasizing the importance of the relationship between the practitioner and the patient. Our objective is to help physicians-in-training unite the old and the new, becoming doctors who combine the high tech skills of cutting edge medical science and technology with the high touch skills of cutting edge medical science and technology with the high touch of communication, empathy and compassion.
