Parents looking for answers about potential health effects problems such as asthma, behavioral problems, learning difficulties and others often turn to their child’s pediatrician for guidance. The average US physician receives only six hours of environmental health teaching which leads to missed diagnoses and opportunities for prevention lost. The panel discussed common pediatric environmental health "hot topics" and then briefly touched on the current evidence for each topic. After the presentation those in attendance participated in small group workshops to develop evidence-based health messages that are easily comprehensible. The workshop concluded with the group sharing useful resources affecting children’s environmental health.
Panelists included:
Sophie Balk, MD, Children's Hospital at Montefiore
Barbara Brenner, MSW, DrPH, Mt. Sinai Medical Center
