NYAM Honors Health Leaders at Annual Awards Ceremony

On Tuesday, November 18, 2008 The New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) hosted its Anniversary Discourse and Awards—a tradition started in 1847 to mark the anniversary of the founding of NYAM. This year the awards ceremony paid special tribute to individuals with distinguished accomplishments health policy, public health, medicine, and scientific research.

Keynote speaker Huda Akil, PhD (Click for video of speech), the Quarton Distinguished University Professor of Neuroscience and Psychiatry at the University of Michigan and the Director of its Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute gave a talk titled "From Neurons to Neighborhoods" exploring the impact a child’s environment

has on adult brain chemistry, primarily the early causes of anxiety and depression. Dr. Akil’s research shows a strong relationship between environment and social disparities supporting the argument for success with program interventions at the community level.

New this year, NYAM’s award for distinguished contributions in health policy went to John K. Iglehart (Click for video of speech), the founder of Health Affairs. A peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary journal, Health Affairs has made its mark by translating health services research and analysis into content that is more accessible to members of Congress and other key participants in federal and state health policy making. After 26 years it remains the largest circulating health policy journal in the United States and has subscribers in 25 countries.

The Stephen Smith Medal for lifetime achievement in public health went to Harvey V. Fineberg, MD, PhD (Click for video of speech), President of the Institute of Medicine. Dr. Fineberg has served as Provost of Harvard University, following as Dean of the Harvard School of Public Health. He has devoted most of his career to the fields of health policy and decision making. At the IOM, he has chaired and served on a number of panels dealing with issues ranging from AIDS to new medical technology.

The John Sterns medal for lifetime achievement in medicine went to Richard Mayeux, MD, MSc (Click for video of speech), the Gertrude H. Sergievsky Professor of Neurology, Psychiatry and Epidemiology at Columbia University. Over the past 20 years, Dr. Mayeux has led a multidisciplinary population-based investigation of Alzheimer’s disease and other age related disorders known as the Washington Heights-Inwood Community Aging Project. The study continues to provide the most up to date information on this communities aging health status.

The plaque for exceptional service to NYAM went to Jack Rudin (Click for video of speech), Chairman of Rudin Management, builder, developer and manager of New York City real estate. The Rudin family’s unique contribution to philanthropies is renowned in New York City. Mr. Rudin serves on several Boards including of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

The NYAM medal for distinguished contributions in biomedical science went to Joan A Steitz, PhD (Click for video of speech), the Sterling Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University School of Medicine. She is internationally renowned for establishing a sub field of molecular biology which reveals the molecules critical for carrying out all of the body’s most basic biological processes.

NYAM Report - Federal Health Care Reform in New York State: A Population Health Perspective

The New York Academy of Medicine with support from the New York State Heath Foundation released a new report, Federal Health Care Reform in New York State: A Population Health Perspective.

This report identifies opportunities that build on both the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act (ACA) and New York’s ongoing efforts toward improving the health of its 19 million residents.
