NYAM Honors Pediatrician With Brock Award

On November 17, The New York Academy of Medicine awarded its prestigious Millie and Richard Brock Award and lectureship in Pediatrics to Dr Glen Flores, Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health, Director of General Pediatrics, the Judith and Charles Ginsburg Chair in Pediatrics, and the Director of the Academic General Pediatrics Fellowship at UT Southwestern and Children’s Medical Center Dallas. Dr Flores has been a long time advocate and researcher of racial/ethnic disparities in health and healthcare, Latino children’s health, access to healthcare, and culture and clinical care and is a practicing pediatrician who has cared for under-served children for 14 years.

Among his many accolades in a distinguished career, Dr Flores has founded and is the former Co-Director of the Pediatric Latino Clinic at Boston Medical Center. He is a former Robert Wood Johnson Generalist Physician Faculty Scholar and a former Robert Wood Johnson Minority Medical Faculty Scholar. He was the co-founder and for five years the co-director of the Special Interest Group on Culture, Ethnicity, and Health Care of the Ambulatory Pediatric Association. He recently testified in the United States Senate on Latino health and the Hispanic Health Improvement Act, and provided a Congressional Briefing on his work on uninsured children.

NYAM is delighted to have had the opportunity to spotlight Dr Flores stellar career and his service to children. "Dr Flores’ continued advocacy for the lives of children, uninsured and under-served has been a great contribution to public health," said Jo Ivey Boufford, President of The New York Academy of Medicine. "It is a pleasure to recognize him in the height of his career as a pediatrician and advocate."

The Brock Lecture, Award and Visiting Professorship in Pediatrics was established by in 1995 on the 100th anniversary of NYAM’s Section on Pediatrics to sponsor a nationally recognized leader in pediatrics to engage in a one to two day visiting professorship at a New York-area pediatrics training program, to deliver the annual Brock Lecture, and to receive the Brock Award for distinguished contributions to pediatrics

NYAM Report - Federal Health Care Reform in New York State: A Population Health Perspective

The New York Academy of Medicine with support from the New York State Heath Foundation released a new report, Federal Health Care Reform in New York State: A Population Health Perspective.

This report identifies opportunities that build on both the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act (ACA) and New York’s ongoing efforts toward improving the health of its 19 million residents.
