Newly Inducted Junior Fellows discuss Emerging Global Public Health Issues

Nov. 10, NEW YORK CITY ??? NYAM President Jo Ivey Boufford, MD, facilitated an interactive seminar, "Emerging Global Public Health Issues: What are they? Why are they important? What can we learn from them?" for middle and high school students who were being inducted into The Junior Fellows Program. This NYAM program provides educational opportunities for selected New York City public school students who show interest and potential in the fields of public health, science, medicine, and research.

The presentation by Dr. Boufford included discussion of premature infant mortality, some of the preventative measures, and where the United States ranks compared to the rest of the world. Following Dr. Boufford’s presentation, the Junior Fellows were asked to break into groups and consider either the problem of infant mortality (infants who die before the age of one) or that of under five mortality, choose a specific health issue on which to focus, and develop possible solutions as recommendations for President Elect, Barack Obama.

Topics addressed by the Junior Fellows included HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, and malaria. Although their topics varied, the students’ suggestions for the future all included increased interest and funds to support education, prevention, research and evaluation.

Over the course of the next year, the Junior Fellows will choose to research a topic in public health, medicine, or science; receive instruction from NYAM librarians on how to use reliable online medical and health sources; participate in science and health career seminars at NYAM; visit academic medical centers; and develop presentation skills that will help when they present their research findings at a poster session to their peers, family, and teachers and NYAM staff at the end of the year.

The Junior Fellows Program, a collaboration between the Office of School Health Programs and the Library at NYAM, has helped more than a thousand New York City public school students to advance their knowledge of science and promote their pursuit of careers in the health professions. It is the only program of its kind in New York.
