NYAM's International Society on Urban Health and the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) will present an international forum for knowledge exchange among urban health stakeholders. Leaders concerned with the viability of cities will converge on the Kenyatta International Conference Center in Nairobi, Kenya, for the Eighth Annual International Conference on Urban Health (ICUH) from October 19 through October 23. Attendees will address issues pertaining to urban health, with emphasis on interventions that help alleviate barriers to urban health care, and to promoting strategies and policies that enhance the health of people living in cities. The ultimate goal of ICUH is to mobilize and energize like-minded professionals addressing the effects of urbanization and urban environments on the health of people.

Community Voices-teams working with people in Nairobi’s slums will discuss and prioritize urban health problems and articulate their perspectives on how these problems can be addressed. (The “voices” will be comprised of selected delegates from various informal settlements.)
Urban Health Championsworking teams will include World Mayors/National Ministers, Directors of Urban Health Affairs, Non-governmental Agencies active in urban affairs; African Development Agencies; United Nations HABITAT; and representatives invited from Australia, England, France, Guam, India, Iran, Kenya, Latin America, Netherlands, Pakistan, South Africa, Tanzania, and Eastern European Countries. As of September 15, 40 representatives have accepted the invitation.
The Main Conference will consist of plenaries, oral and poster sessions. Keynote speakers will include: Dr. Anna Kajumulo Tibaijuka, UN Under Secretary-General for UN-HABITAT; Dr. Siddharth Agarwal, Executive Director Urban Health Resources of New Delhi, India; Hon. Enrique Pendalosa, Former Mayor of Bogot??, Columbia (pop. 7 million) and Senior International Advisor to the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy; Dr Diana R. The International Conference on Urban Health will focus on the challenges and solutions that are occurring in cities throughout the world. Our expectation is that this sharing of information will lead to the adoption of strategies that might be used in the United States and throughout the world, much like was done when the United States was able to adopt strategies like “congestion pricing,” first seen in Britain, or “participatory budgeting,” first used in Brazil, and now used in 250 countries around the world.
Ultimately, NYAM and the many participants hope to see this Conference bring attention to population health in urban settings with a focus this year on low and middle income countries. This Conference will be a lead-in for multiple WHO and UN HABITAT initiatives planned for 2010 (including the Global Urban Health Report). Through the International Society for Urban Health, with the Secretariat housed at NYAM, the agenda and work of this Conference will be moved forward into the coming years. The Ninth International Conference on Urban Health is scheduled for New York City in October 2010.
