Spotlight on NYAM at Museum Mile

The corner of 103rd Street and Fifth Avenue will be abuzz with activity on June 9 as NYAM celebrates Museum Mile along with other celebrated museums and institutions in this area. NYAM will spotlight its School Health Programs for the many families who attend this June event.

New York's Museum Mile Festival attracts tourists from across the world to celebrate the museums on Fifth Avenue.
Since 1979, the Office of School Health Programs (OSHP) has developed and delivered a wide array of health education initiatives for New York City public schools and for schools and communities nationally, through creation of state-of-the-art curriculum materials, through interactive training workshops, dynamic programs for professional development and consultation and technical assistance. OSHP also addresses the health needs of children, parents, and families through partnerships with community based organizations to build the capacity of their staff to provide health promotion initiatives at multiple sites throughout New York City with an emphasis on East Harlem. OSHP also works through its Junior Fellows , Scholars, and G.I.R.L.S. programs to increase the diversity of the health care workforce by helping New York City minority youth, underrepresented in science and medicine, to build their capacity to pursue careers in medicine, nursing, public health, social work, and other health professions. The G.I.R.L.S. (Getting Into Real Life Science) and the Health Professions program, is a new 3 year initiative for girls in East Harlem middle schools. It provides the girls with opportunities for academic support, career exploration and personal and social development to help them pursue health careers.

The Museum Mile Festival began as an initiative to spur the development of new museum audiences and to increase support for the arts during the fiscal crisis of the 1970s, Museum Mile was formed as a consortium by the museums that share the Fifth Avenue address. From the barrios of East Harlem and the townhouses lining the Upper East Side, to the winding streets of the Village and the clustered neighborhoods of the outer-boroughs, people came to celebrate their shared pride in their city.

Museum Mile Festival's reach now goes far beyond New York City. Thousands of tourists from around the country and world make their trip to Museum Mile Festival a yearly vacation tradition. Total attendance records over its twenty-six years have surpassed one million visitors, and because of the success of the festival and the work of consortium, the City of New York officially designated Fifth Avenue from 82nd to 105th streets as "Museum Mile" further cementing the area as one of the city??s major cultural resources.
