The New York Academy of Medicine Applauds Governor’s New Proposal to Lower Cost of Healthier Beverages as part of Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Tax

New York, NY - The New York Academy of Medicine announced today its support of Governor David A. Paterson’s new proposal to lower the cost of healthier beverages in tandem with taxing sugary beverages. The proposal will exempt low-calorie beverages from all state and local sales taxes, while also adding a tax on beverages containing more than ten calories per eight ounces. The new proposal will encourage the consumption of low-calorie beverages, a critical step in helping to reduce obesity among children and adults across the state.

“This proposal doubles the reasons for consumers to move away from sugary, high-calorie beverages,” said Jo Ivey Boufford, MD, NYAM President. “The penny per ounce tax idea was already a strong, evidence-based public health intervention. Exempting water and low-calorie beverages from state and local sales taxes strengthen the intervention by making healthier options more affordable. It’s responsive to the community, to industry, and to our mounting obesity epidemic. The legislature should approve this new proposal now.”
