Ancient Medical Text Now Available Online

The New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) is pleased to announce that the Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus, the world’s oldest known surgical document and a treasure of NYAM's Historical Collections, can now be viewed online in a high-resolution and interactive format. The National Library of Medicine (NLM) presents the virtual papyrus on its website as part of its "Turning the Pages" project, which offers interactive access to rare books.

The papyrus dates to around 1600 B.C. and is written in Ancient Egyptian hieratic script. The text contains details of 48 surgical cases dealing with wounds and trauma, including the description, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment for each injury. The interactive version of the papyrus allows viewers to unroll the scroll, read translations of the cases, and use the zoom feature to examine portions of the scroll more closely. Additional commentary and high-resolution scans of the individual leaves of the papyrus are also available on the site.

To unroll and view the scroll, please visit http://archive.nlm.nih.gov/proj/ttp/flash/smith/smith.html

For more information on the papyrus and how it was brought to life online, visit http://www.nlm.nih.gov/news/turn_page_egyptian.html.
