On July 15 at NYAM, the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) hosted a reception honoring its 2010 Leadership Fellows, Resident Leaders. The program included NYAM President Dr. Jo Ivey Boufford, NHMA President and CEO Dr. Elena V. Rios, and special guest speaker Dr. Jaime Torres, Director, Region II, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Alan D. Aviles, President and CEO of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, was presented the NHMA Hispanic Health Leadership Award. The other two recipients of the award, not present, were New York City Council Member Maria Del Carmen Arroyo and Adolfo Carrion, Director of the New York and New Jersey Region, US Department of Housing.
Established in 1994 in Washington, DC, the National Hispanic Medical Association is a non-profit association representing the interests of 45,000 licensed Hispanic physicians in the United States. NHMA's mission is to empower Hispanic physicians to lead efforts to improve the health of Hispanic populations in collaboration with the state, regional and local level Hispanic medical societies, resident and medical student organizations, and other public and private sector partners.
The NHMA Leadership Fellowship Program and Resident Leadership Program are designed to help NHMA members gain the knowledge and skills necessary to take a leadership role in health policy development and advocacy at local, state and national levels on issues of importance to the health of the Hispanic community.
