NEW YORK, NY ??? The New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) has awarded the 2010 Lewis Rudin Glaucoma Prize to Dr. Yeni H. Y??cel, Professor and Director of Ophthalmic Pathology, Departments of Ophthalmology & Vision Sciences and Laboratory Medicine & Pathobiology, University of Toronto, and pathologist-scientist at the Keenan Research Center at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michael's Hospital. Dr. Y??cel was awarded the prestigious $50,000 prize for his scholarly research resulting in an article, "Identification of lymphatics in the ciliary body of the human eye: A novel uveolympahtic outflow pathway," published in Experimental Eye Research, Volume 89, Issue 5, Pages 810-819, November 2009. Contributors to the article included Miles G. Johnston, Tina Ly, Manoj Patel, Brian Drake, Ersin G??m??ş, Stephan A. Fraenkl, Sara Moore, Dalia Tobbia, Dianna Armstrong, Eva Horvath, and Neeru Gupta. A full copy of the article may be found at www.sciencedirect.com.

The Rudin Glaucoma Prize recognizes the most significant scholarly article on glaucoma published in a peer-reviewed journal in the prior calendar year. Recipients are nominated by their peers, and a winner is chosen by The New York Academy of Medicine's Lewis Rudin Prize Selection Committee and approved by the NYAM Board of Trustees. The prize was established by Lewis and Jack Rudin, New York builders and philanthropists who recognized the importance of rewarding superior research in glaucoma. Since its inception in 1995, the committee has recognized the outstanding contributions of physicians and scientists working on the challenges of glaucoma and has become a highly respected and acknowledged award.

Dr. David Abramson, Chair of the Lewis Rudin Prize Selection Committee, focused on the importance of Dr. Y??cel's insightful research and his perseverance in helping to foster greater understanding of glaucoma, a disease of the eye that affects an estimated four million Americans each year. It is also the second leading cause of blindness in the world, according to the World Health Organization.

"This work opens entirely new avenues for understanding the cause and treatment of glaucoma and its implications are profound," Dr. Abramson said. "The prestigious Rudin Prize honors Dr. Y??cel's critical work and will lead the way to future research regarding the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma." Dr. Y??cel obtained his MD degree from the University Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France in 1985. His PhD in Neuroscience followed in 1989 from the CNRS Neurochemistry Centre, Strasbourg. Postdoctoral fellowships were completed in Ophthalmology at the University of British Columbia and in Pathology at the Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto. He finished his residency in Neuropathology at the University of Toronto in 1995 and followed this with a year of Anatomical Fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.

After pursuing a glaucoma research fellowship at University of California, San Diego, in 1997, Dr. Y??cel was appointed at the Departments of Ophthalmology and Laboratory Medicine & Pathology, University of Toronto. He was also recruited to St. Michael's Hospital in 1998 where he serves as a pathologist-scientist specializing in diseases of the eye. Dr. Y??cel is internationally recognized for his pioneering scientific work relating eye disease to brain pathology, and has been awarded numerous national and global awards for research in glaucoma and neuroprotection. His team has discovered a lymphatic circulation in the eye and its role in aqueous humor drainage. This discovery has major implications for novel glaucoma treatments to prevent blindness.
