NYAM’s Project VIVA Harlem will kick off the 2010-2011 flu season by sponsoring a Harlem Influenza Awareness Week from October 17-23 with support from the NYC DOHMH Bureau of Immunization, Palladia, Inc. and Touro College of Pharmacy. Project VIVA, a multilevel community participatory intervention designed to rapidly immunize hard-to-reach populations in disadvantaged minority communities, will host seven flu clinics at various locations (community-based organizations, senior centers, and faith-based organizations) in the East and Central Harlem communities.
"Although a goal is to provide vaccinations for these hard-to-reach populations, our main objective is to expand our ability to communicate with the community, especially as we begin to move closer to the flu season," said Dr. David Vlahov, Director of the Center for Urban Epidemiologic Studies at NYAM, which oversees Project VIVA. "This effort also represents an opportunity for NYAM to work closely with the Harlem community to address the alarming disparities that exist between those who have access to vaccinations and those who are consistently at risk of falling through the cracks."
In addition to providing free vaccines during the Harlem Influenza Awareness Week and through December, Project VIVA staff, also known as "Yellow Jackets" for their bright attire, will continue their education outreach efforts and disseminate VIVA’s influenza education comic. The VIVA logo and the "Yellow Jacket" image will be used on all materials, including posters, flyers, website, and social media pages (Facebook and Twitter).
Dr. Vlahov said new materials will be developed with community residents to address the particular concerns of the targeted high-risk groups, such as older adults. Project VIVA Harlem will also continue to conduct education workshops with community-based organizations, and will expand outreach to other non-traditional venues such as faith-based organizations.
