New York, NY - Dr. Jeffrey Sachs, Director of The Earth Institute, Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development and Professor of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University, and Special Advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, will deliver the keynote address at the
9th Annual International Conference on Urban Health (ICUH) on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 from 12:30-1:30 pm at The New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM), 1216 Fifth Avenue (at 103rd Street).
Dr. Sachs' speech follows the morning session of speakers which will include welcome remarks at 9 a.m. by
Dr. Jo Ivey Boufford, NYAM President,
Dr. David Vlahov, President, The International Society of Urban Health,
Dr. Thomas A. Farley, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and
Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, Director, Pan American Health Organization. Other key speakers for the opening session will include:
- Adolfo Carrion, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Regional Director (New York and New Jersey); Former director of the White House Office of Urban Affairs; Former Bronx Borough President;
- Dr. Luis Fernando Duque, Senate of the Republic of Colombia; and
- Dr. Trudy Harpham, Emeritus Professor, London South Bank University.
The principal theme of the 9th Annual ICUH is "Good Governance for Healthy Cities," with special interest in the positive consequences in urban health interventions, as well as the social and public health policies that are required to address these issues. The conference will address how governments can develop and implement policy that improves the health of all urban residents and reduces urban inequities. Although governance and health are the focus, these issues will be examined in a multitude of sectors: health services, violence and security, transportation and injuries, housing and infrastructure, neighborhoods and the urban environment, reproductive and maternal child health, the social determinants of health, substance use and homeless populations, and still others. ISUH is an association of researchers, scholars, professionals and community members, workers, and activists from various disciplines, roles, and areas of the world whose work is directly related to the health effects of urban environments and urbanization.
