The New York Academy of Medicine is hosting a unique symposium on Thursday, January 20, 2011 that will offer area policymakers strategies to stop the epidemic of obesity, particularly in New York’s low-income neighborhoods and communities of color. The event, "What Must New York Do Now to Prevent Obesity? A Symposium of Good Ideas from the Field,” is being sponsored by NYAM’s new obesity prevention policy center, Designing a Strong and Healthy New York (DASH-NY), and will focus on transformative policies and sustainable programs in four domains: neighborhoods, places for children, food systems, and health care. The symposium will feature two panels: “School and Community Food Interventions” and “Physical Activity Interventions.”
Lynne Holden, MD, Executive Director of Mentoring in Medicine, will deliver the keynote address. Other speakers include Benjamin Ortiz, MD, New York City School Meals Coalition; Stephen Ritz, Hunts Point HS and Green Living Technologies of Rochester; Kimberly George, Greater Brooklyn Health Coalition and CAMBA; Monica Serrano, United Neighborhood Houses; and Amy Klein, Capital District Community Garden.
