First-Ever National Urban Health Conference to be Hosted by The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, The New York Academy of Medicine, Harlem Hospital, Emblem Health and The City College of New York

New York, NY – The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, along with The New York Academy of Medicine, Harlem Hospital, Emblem Health, and The City College of New York, will host a four-day National Urban Health Conference focusing on topics of great interest to the community, including obesity, oral health, mental and heart health, financial health, and spiritual health. The conference was organized in an effort to begin a sincere and meaningful dialogue about critical health issues plaguing urban communities throughout the nation. Organizers hope the conference will serve as a model for businesses, community leaders, health organizations, and academic institutions to come together to discover multi-sector solutions to these problems.

Speakers for the opening day conference will include Lisa Staiano-Coico, PhD, President, The City College of New York; Jo Ivey Boufford, MD, President, The New York Academy of Medicine; and Laurie Zephyrin, MD, National Director for Reproductive Health, US Department of Veterans Affairs.

Following opening remarks, the conference will convene a panel on aspects of obesity, featuring Darwin Deen, MD, Medical Professor of Community Health and Social Medicine, Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education; Javier Lopez, MPA, Director of NYC Strategic Alliance for Health; Aletha Maybank, MD, MPH, Assistant Commissioner, New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene; and Michelle Paige Paterson, MS, Director, Integrative Wellness, Emblem Health and Former First Lady of New York.

A second panel during the afternoon session will focus on oral health and will feature Enrique Riggs, DDS; Leon Merrick, DDS; Chester Redhead, DDS; Carol Morales, DDS; Karen Gear, DDS; Ernest Robertson, DDS; Robert North, DDS; Richard Ferreira, MSW; and Theresa Montini, MD, Assistant Medical Professor of Community Health and Social Medicine, Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education.

NYAM Report - Federal Health Care Reform in New York State: A Population Health Perspective

The New York Academy of Medicine with support from the New York State Heath Foundation released a new report, Federal Health Care Reform in New York State: A Population Health Perspective.

This report identifies opportunities that build on both the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act (ACA) and New York’s ongoing efforts toward improving the health of its 19 million residents.
