As NYAM recognizes our 175th anniversary this year, we also celebrate 175 years of our outstanding library, which has grown from a handful of medical books in 1847 to over a million items that collectively tell the story of medicine and public health around the world. On September 21, we look forward to welcoming new and longtime Library supporters alike as we gather for the first time since 2019 to celebrate the library’s history and ongoing legacy. This festive evening of food, drink and networking provides the opportunity to meet the NYAM Library team, take an inside look at what we do, and explore a special display of some of our rare treasures.

Our collections include a 3,600-year-old Egyptian surgical papyrus, a medieval manuscript copy of an ancient Roman cookbook, a collection of rare books dating from the dawn of printing in the 15th century, and hundreds of thousands of volumes—books and journals—chronicling the rise of medicine and public health around the world. Each year we offer tours of our collections and host lectures and public events, using the insights of history to shed light on current challenges in medicine and public health. We’re proud to welcome everyone who wants to use our collections.
