Dr. Padmini Murthy joined the Academy as a Fellow in 2010.

Dr. Padmini MurthyThe Academy congratulates Fellow Padmini Murthy, MD, MPH, FAMWA, FRSPH, who will receive the 2016 Elizabeth Blackwell Medal of the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) on Saturday, March 12, 2016, during the AMWA Annual Meeting in Miami, Florida.

The Elizabeth Blackwell Medal is AMWA’s highest award, and is granted annually to a woman physician who has made the most outstanding contributions to the cause of women in the field of medicine. As an international leader in global women’s health and a tireless advocate for women in medicine, Dr. Murthy is most deserving of this award.  She will be the first Indian-American recipient of this award.

Dr. Murthy is Associate Professor in Health Policy and Management and Family and Community Medicine and Global Health Director at New York Medical College. She is a physician and activist who did her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and has practiced medicine and public health for 28 years in various countries. Dr. Murthy is the NGO Co-Representative of Medical Women International Association to the United Nations and is a member of the Executive Committee of the NGO CSW Committee of NY at the United Nations. Dr. Murthy has been working on promoting women’s health with a special emphasis on safe mother hood in Grenada, India, Liberia, Malawi and Nepal

She has been at the forefront of organizing workshops and seminars internationally on women’s health. She has received numerous awards including the Sojourner Truth Pin, which is given to women who excel in community service. Dr. Murthy’s many publications include the textbook Women's Global Health and Human Rights, which is used worldwide. She serves as a peer reviewer and Associate Editor for the BMC Journal of Public Health and Global Journal of Medicine and Public Health.

Dr. Murthy became a Fellow of the Academy in 2010 has represented the Academy at major international events including the Commission on the Status of Women held annually at the United Nations. As program chair of the upcoming American Public Health Association Annual Meeting in November 2016 in Denver, Colorado, Dr. Murthy is working on the International Health section and collaborating with the Academy on organizing a high-level joint event.
